A degree in marijuana studies? Yes, you read that right. A Michigan University is offering first-ever degree in Marijuana Studies.
Students at the Northern Michigan University now have one more degree option to choose from. A four-year bachelor of Science program, the degree seems like an unconventional one.
The program is titled ‘Medicinal Plant Chemistry’ and combines chemistry, biology, botany, horticulture, marketing and finance classes into one course study. The students have the choice to specialize in entrepreneurial and bio-analytical tracks to focus on business or scientific aspects.
The focus of the program is to tap chemists, entrepreneurs and horticulture experts into the state’s booming marijuana industry. However, the students won’t be using it or cultivating it.
Steve Mitchell, NMU Board of Trustees member told the press: “No one is growing marijuana. No one is violating and state or federal laws. But there are a lot of plants that can be studied.”
The program is growing, told Dr. Mark Paulsen, director of the University’s chemistry department.
