One of the most politically sound and charismatic personality, Benazir Bhutto would have turned 64 years of age today. She inherited a legacy of political background left by her father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan. She justified the inheritance by becoming the first female Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Benazir went to Catholic Schools in Pakistan. She entered Harvard University’s Radcliffe College at the age of 16 and earned a cum laude degree in comparative government in 1973. Later, she went on to Oxford University where she became the first Asian woman to be elected as the President of the Oxford Union, which is an elite debating society.
Benazir’s father founded Pakistan People’s Party. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto served as the president and the prime minister of Pakistan from 1971 to 1977. He was later removed in 1977 coup staged by General Muhammad Zia-ul-haque and was executed in 1979. She returned to Pakistan from exile in Britain and was greeted by a huge crowd. Her motorcade took 9.5 hours to cover 8 miles distance from airport to rally site in Lahore.
Benazir was married on December 18 1987 to Asif Ali Zardari who was a businessman and later became the president of Pakistan. The marriage was arranged by her mother, Bhutto did not meet her future husband until five days before marriage.
Return to Pakistan and Assassination
She returned to Pakistan after staying eight years in Dubai on 18th October, 2007. She survived a suicide attack on her first day of return during the welcome procession in Karachi, which killed 150 people. Benazir was assassinated during her ill-fated rally at Liaquat Bagh before the elections, which were to be held in the country. The two-time Prime Minister appeared from her sunroof of her jeep to acknowledge the supporters when she was killed. She died at the age of 53 and was buried in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, Sindh along with her family members.
