“Only Messi could do things I cannot do”, says Totti as he retires from Roma

The football fraternity experienced a gloomy wave as Italian footballing legend Francesco Totti hung his boots after a 25-year playing career at Roma in the Serie A league. The 40-year old Italian icon came was substituted in the 54th minute for Roma left the entire football world in a tears and gratitude.

The legend made his debut for Roma at the age of 16 and clinched the Serie A title in 2000-1 season while recording 16 red cards to his name during his football career. Totti made 786 competitive appearances for Roma in all competitions, which stands to be a club record. He had registered 307 competitive goals for Roma in all competitions while played 25 seasons in Serie A, equaling the record of AC Milan’s Paolo Maldini. His personal record of 32 goals in (2006-07) season helped him to win Serie A golden boot and European Golden Shoe with 26 goals that season.

Totti stated that winning one league title with Roma was worth more than winning 10 at Juventus or Real Madrid. He also added that there is only player who is doing things he could never do, and that was none other than Lionel Messi.

The Italian footballer was praised by Argentina’s legend Diego Maradona who stated that Totti is the king of Rome and that he is and will be the best player he has ever seen. Another Italian goal keeper legend, Gianluigi Buffon admitted that some of Totti’s goals registered against him were so brilliant that he would have ruined a masterpiece had he blocked them. French midfielder and all-time great Michael Platini reiterated that Totti is an artist of football and a real number 10 just as he was.

Earlier, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, star Xabi Alonso also retired as he helped the Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich seize their fifth consecutive league title. The football is destined to cherish the memories and sheer class of legends for all time to come and perhaps see them in managerial role scripting history just as Zidane looks on to seize the second consecutive Champions league trophy as his Real Madrid clashes with Juventus on Saturday.
