“Back in our days” is the most commonly spoken statement from one generation to another. It’s a universal fact that old generation thinks the new gen is up to no good, while the new one thinks the old gen had it easier than them, or boring.
Being born in the early 90’s, I consider myself as the one last ascendants of sane and socially stable generation, right before the millennials took over. You would nod your head in total agreement if you are also an early 90’s lad like me.
We are the generation that has had a taste of it all, grew up enjoying the best of both worlds. We are the first generation that had the privilege of using personal computers, had access to internet inside our homes, listened to cassette stereos, watched movies on VCRs, played video games before it was cool, and undertook outdoor physical games and activities too while maintaining complete human social interactions unlike millenials who have a happening social media life, while their real social life sucks AF.
There are a many things that make us the coolest generation of all times, but let’s sort the 5 best things every 90’s purist would find totally relatable.
We Kept it Outdoors
Baraf pani, Chupan Chupai, Cricket, Football, Hockey, you name it. Been there done that right where it belongs, outdoors. Unlike millenials who test their dribbling or batting skills at their computer or mobile screen.
Pre-School Disnep Therapy
Not a single morning went by when we didn’t wake up an hour early to watch our favorite morning cartoons like Popeye, Looney Toons, Donald Duck, Camp Candy, Captain Planet and others. That was all the motivation we needed to make it through a tiring school day.
Lazier than a Turtle Dial-Up Internet Connection
4 mbs per second downloading speed seems insufficient these days, imagine the struggle of disconnecting the PTCL line to use a dial-up connection that took 10 attempts and at least an hour to connect.
And it took more than 3 minutes for an msn messenger to load.
Ek Billi Moti Taazi Si
“Ek billi moti tazi thi jo mazay se ding dong khati thi”.
Remember the sweet melody and visual treat of ding dong animated advertisements? It was the mantra we all grew up chanting. The chewing gum itself was sinfully sweet but the ads were sweeter.
Udhaar k VHS Tapes
CDs are a long lost cause now. Now all you need is to go to the internet, download a movie, and watch it free of cost. The struggle was real back in our days where we had to rent VHS (VCR) tapes to watch a single movie with our limited pocket money.
Are you a 90’s lad? If you are, how many of these things can you relate to? Do share your thoughts with us.
